Meniscal Repair Recovery Guide

What is Meniscus?

Cartilage cushions in your knee. When torn, can be repaired or removed.

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in your knee joint that acts as a natural shock absorber. Each knee has two menisci:

  • Medial meniscus – located on the inner side of the knee
  • Lateral meniscus – located on the outer side of the knee

These structures sit between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia).

Recovery Timeline

Week 0–4: Protection & Partial Weight Bearing

During the first four weeks, the main goal is to protect the healing tissue and reduce swelling.

  • Use crutches to maintain partial weight bearing as advised by your surgeon.
  • A knee brace may be recommended to limit bending.
  • Focus on pain control, swelling reduction (ice & elevation), and gentle range-of-motion exercises.
  • Begin light physiotherapy exercises such as quadriceps activation and straight leg raises.

🔹 Goal: Protect repair and regain safe knee movement.

Week 4–8: Transition to Full Weight Bearing

At this stage, healing has progressed enough to gradually increase activity.

  • Transition to full weight bearing without crutches (as advised).
  • Improve knee bending and straightening.
  • Start closed-chain strengthening exercises (mini squats, step-ups).
  • Continue physiotherapy to restore normal walking pattern.

🔹 Goal: Restore mobility and normalize gait.

Week 8–16: Strengthening Phase

This is the rebuilding phase where strength and endurance are improved.

  • Progressive strengthening of quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles.
  • Balance and proprioception training.
  • Stationary cycling and low-impact cardio exercises.
  • Light functional movements depending on recovery progress.

🔹 Goal: Build muscle strength and joint stability.

Month 4–6: Return to Sports & Full Activity

By this time, most patients regain near-normal strength and stability.

  • Advanced strengthening and agility drills.
  • Gradual return to jogging and sport-specific training.
  • Full return to competitive sports only after medical clearance.

🔹 Goal: Safe return to sports without risk of re-injury.

Key Points for Recovery

Protect the repair – no twisting movements!
Avoid sudden turns, pivoting, or deep squatting to prevent stress on the healing tissue.

Weight bearing is limited in the beginning.
You may need crutches and gradual progression as advised by your doctor.

Recovery takes longer than meniscus removal surgery.
Since the meniscus is being repaired and preserved, healing time is naturally longer.

Better for your knee in the long term.
Preserving the meniscus helps maintain shock absorption, joint stability, and reduces the risk of early arthritis.

Following your physiotherapy plan carefully ensures safe healing and strong knee recovery.
